Wiper Seal with No Leaks, No Flow-by Makes Hunter Pro-Spray® Better

Sometimes things look the same when they’re actually not. In the case of the Pro-Spray®, Hunter developed some unique features in the wiper seal design that make the sprinkler’s performance not only as good as the leading competitor in the market, but actually better.

The Competition The leading competitor’s sprinkler develops body cap leaks over time due to the plastic-on-plastic cap seal that is temperature and pressure sensitive.

Hunter Pro-Spray The Hunter sprinkler is designed with a wiper seal that also seals the cap where it threads to the body. No body cap leaks – ever!

Most notably, the seal is designed to eliminate flow-by (the small amount of leakage during the pop-up stroke that can prevent sprinklers from operating well in low pressure situations). The Pro-Spray has been laboratory tested to insure flow-by is as low or lower than any of its competitors.

According to Gene Smith, product engineer for the Pro-Spray, the task was clear: to develop a sprinkler that would perform better than anything out there – both during installation and over the long term. “Our specific seal design is unique because it seals both at the top and the bottom of the seal,” he said. “This prevents grit from entering from above and reduces any leakage from below for a seal that really lasts over the long term. The feedback from users is that Hunter has given them a sprinkler that outperforms the competition.”

In addition, because the material of the seal and the cap are different, both parts expand and contract at different rates. This encouraged Hunter engineers to make the parts separate, so that these expansion issues would not warp or pull the seal out of shape. And, an added benefit is that the seal can be removed from the cap for easy cleaning.
