Rotor Nozzle Performance is More Than Meets the Eye

Nozzle PerformanceAt first glance, other manufacturer’s rotor nozzles may look more specialized and finely crafted than Hunter’s. But those initial looks may be deceiving. The "simple" appearance of Hunter’s nozzles is actually a simplicity that we have worked toward and have attained through vast amounts of engineering and testing. After all, the fewer little "doodads" there are on a nozzle, the easier it is going to be to consistently replicate them and produce a product that can deliver the exact same performance from one individual nozzle to the next.

Of course, a Hunter nozzle is more than just a hole. Take a look at the smooth outward appearance of any of our nozzles, then flip it over and inspect the inside. That’s where you’ll find our carefully chosen minimal number of ridges and indentations, each specially designed to channel and direct the water flow for the ultimate in performance.

So, why hide it all? Hunter’s engineering department has concluded that it is more effective to put the "fine tuning" features on the inner portion of the nozzle rather than on the exterior. Placed on the outside, they are exposed and thus more susceptible to being altered or damaged by the elements or by vandalism. They can also be easily contaminated by dirt particles, which will affect the nozzle’s performance (no wonder the dirt tolerance standards for Hunter nozzles are much more exacting than the competition). Plus, they can just plain hurt when you have to use your fingers to push down on them to install the nozzle.

Also hidden out of view, on Hunter’s mid-size and larger rotors, is our patented Pressure Port™ nozzling system. This unique design element separates flow to the primary and secondary nozzles into separate chambers and prevents washout, resulting in optimum coverage.

Interior ridges, exterior grooves – who cares unless the nozzles really work, right? Yet nozzle performance is hard to judge with the naked eye. That’s why Hunter puts every nozzle through a complete barrage of tests, then has those results validated by an independent source such as the Center for Irrigation Technology. Of course, the ultimate proving ground is your own turf, where you’ll find our superior scheduling coefficients result in more effective applications and healthier looking landscapes.

In addition to better nozzles, Hunter also offers a sheer greater number of nozzle choices than any other rotors. The PGP has a slew of nozzle offerings that cover the spectrum from .5 to 14 gpm. The I-20 alone features a selection of 22 different nozzles, including short distance and high flow versions. And, Hunter has demonstrated a willingness to create even more new nozzles, based upon the input of our customers. We make the nozzles – just like we make the sprinklers, valves and controllers – that you, the customer, have asked for.

Hunter rotors are the products that helped make Hunter the "full line" company we are today. Yet, it is an often-overlooked component of these sprinklers – the nozzles – that have contributed to the success of our rotors.
